Simply put: In the FDM process molten plastics is applied in layers onto a platform. The building material, which normally is placed on a spool, is guided through a heated extruder. During the cooling process the material hardens quickly. Volumetric parts can be printed with meshlike internal fill structures. Overhanging elements are realized with the help of meshlike support structures. Depending on the material the supporting substance is either water-soluble or can easily be removed later.

Particularly the durability of the materials, the high quality of parts and the stability of mechanical properties make the FDM technology applicable for the manufacturing of not only complex functional parts in small quantities, but also of prototypes for acceptance- and functional tests.
